As moms, we all have that moment in our lives that truly defines who we are and where we are heading in our parenting journey. In this post, I want discuss how these life-altering, transforming and amazing moments can shape an woman’s journey for the better.
Becoming an mother, like any other aspect of our life’s journey is not easy. It does not matter who you are, there will be roadblocks, setbacks and often times a lot of do-overs. It is in these moments that it becomes very easy for us to run back to where we were and what we were doing before all the mess started. For others it’s playing it safe, not wanting to try new things.
In this post I want to share with you my experience and hopefully help you figure out what those defining moments can be for you. Often these moments are defined through setbacks, hurdles or even road blocks in our journey. It is in overcoming these challenges that we become better off as mothers, because we learn to face our fears, we learn to take risks and we learn to persevere.
It was only after my son was diagnosed with autism when I was forced to find the courage to do the impossible. It was during this challenge that I taught myself to create computer games and mobile apps to help my son academically and socially. It was because of this new skill that I was able to create many other successful businesses selling applications. If you want to know more about my leap of faith, you can visit my about page.
How has this moment shaped my journey?
When I find myself in a position where I don’t have the solution for an issue I am faced with in my business (or other aspects of my life), I think back to how the solution came to me to help my son. I remember looking at him and noticing that when he tried to speak he would open and close his mouth to make sounds, but he did not move his lips to form his words. I always reflect on how clearly I was able to break down the cause of his speech problem, and how I was able to create a solution to help him improve his speech… and other solutions to address his other educational and social needs. It is the same way I deal with challenges in my everyday life. I break down a seemingly large problem into smaller issues that I can then address over time and dissolve them by applying one or several solutions.
There are a lot of strategies that can help us move forward in our journey: accountability partners, mastermind groups, vision boards, goal-setting, and things of that nature. But, in my experience, one of the most powerful motivators of all is thinking back on that defining moment, which always reminds us of why we do what we do. It helps me to maintain the confidence that I can face my challenges by breaking them down into smaller issues and overcoming them.
Since my defining moment, I have created the many other solutions including Revision Genie, that helps students prepare for standardized exams in the Caribbean. I have created a game to help students prepare for the Belize PSE, BJAT Exam and the CSEC CXC exams. I have created several other businesses selling apps and software and have received many awards for my work in creating and deploying tech based businesses in Belize and the Caribbean. If you would like to learn more about how I create and sell these solutions, I suggest checking out my book the Digital Cash Evolution.
This defining moment has done a lot more for me than simply defining my journey as a mom and entrepreneur. It has also helped me to develop the skills I needed to communicate with my son in a different way. I can intervene in his life, like any responsible parent should, without the need for conflict. We use these games as a way to communicate and bond. This defining moment crafted an avenue through which I can always reach out to my son and even help him to figure out what he can do with his life.
Meet my son Jayden. He is 11 years old and has Asperger’s Syndrome. He is an animator and published author. He is a very happy child, and while our challenge started with much turmoil and tantrum, today my son is doing very well. He teaches other children like himself how to create animation. He has overcome his impossible challenges and he is building his dream legacy.
